You may be thinking it's a 4 digit code... because there may only be four stars displayed "* * * *",
but if you enter _Franky_'s code 12311, on pressing the last digit '1', the radio should activate..

you are sure with 4-digit code ?
I checked other forums, all codes are 5 digit for BE7995
the operation guide for your model says also, it's a 5-digit code !
if so , is the code 12311

No , it is an VW Sharan , and the serial stamped in the metal casing on the radio it is CORRECT.

Hi, I have just bought a Merc from 1994 with an original Becker radio BE1492. The radio requests a code that I don't have. So I took the radio out and saw that the sticker with the serial no is scatched and the serial no can't be read anymore. But there is a long barcode above with a no under it. Hope this works too.
