Thank you Concalves. My mistake. The four lines were not flashing. I waited for about two hours with the radio on - still not flashing and the radio switched itself off. Any ideas?

Are you sure you are following the code entry instructions correctly as
the - - - - do not always need to flash

Press preset [ 2 ] repeatedly for the second digit
Press preset [ 3 ] repeatedly for the third digit

Thank you Goncalves, looks like the radio is so old that it does not read the keys (pressing button 1-4). But it was worth a try.
