There are 2 battery feeds to the radio.

The Main one via the Ignition Switch . This is used to switch the radio ON

The other is a permanently connected battery feed that retains the radio memory features...ie..the code and the radio station settings.

It looks as though it is this permanent battery feed that is missing.

Check the fuses and the connectors/wiring at the rear of the radio

I'm close to buying a radio of the internet for my e36 since the original tape player broke. The last owner sold the vehicle with all the papers, so the code is nowhere to be found.
As you can see, the label on the new radio is really damaged, but I can make out the following:

PHILIPS, MADE IN GERMANY
First barcode: 9022 217 85242 00
Second bardcode: 003 9817 1384297
Radio model: 22DC785/24E
Code below model radio model: WA009817
