Which code did you try?
My opinion is that 8097 is the right code.

Leave the radio powered up, with ignition key on (i.e. battery light showing),
and radio will eventually reset allowing for another code entry.
Do not touch any buttons as this will re-start the timer sequence.
Leave un-disturbed.

Hi can anyone help me with an unlock code for a 2001 fiat punto
I had to get a new battery and when I tried the radio again
it wouldn't work. I have taken the radio out but the unlock
code isn't written on it. Please help xxx
