Sigh.
Unfortunately, it turns out that the cassette replay mechanism is probably shot.
As it's the tape player I'm trying to replace (mine ate some tape and never recovered) I think I'll have to keep hunting for another unit (and another code?)

(I've also discovered that the 'new' display has a fault -- the upright of the 'E' n 'CODE' is not working. -- so it looks like I'll have to cannibalise them to get one properly working unit. :cuss: )
