radio code; linked with car or radio?

I know this might sound a bit daft but i was wondering is the radio code is linked to the vehicle or the radio itself. I have the radio code for my Renault Clio RadioSat4000 but would i need to input a new code if i replace it?

the code is only for your unit and always remains the same
