Also had a flat battery but also having trouble I think getting the serial number.

What I have is a number which I managed to get from a barcode sticker which was on the underside of the cd player and is VIL264869 - not sure if this counts as starting with V.

I have read the other posts about holding down 1+6 to get the number to display on the screen but like some of the other posters, while this does cause the screen to cycle through various odd looking numbers, I don't see anything that looks like an M or V serial number. I have tried but failed to get the cd player completely out of the dashboard, but saw the barcode by prising it part way out.

                    Any help appreciated!

I think it will have to be removed so that you can quote the correct Serial Number on the label

                      see

Make sure you are quoting the correct Serial Number as any numbers found in car documents , audio guides etc. are often incorrect.
The correct radio SERIAL NUMBER usually begins with M or V followed by SIX digits ...such as M654321 or V654321

Sometimes pressing buttons 6 & 1 together or 6 & 2 will display this number

Otherwise remove the radio from the dashboard and post the SERIAL NUMBER found on a label on the casing

Radio removal instructions can be found here
