Posted in the introductions thread but reposting it here:
Not sure if this is the right place to post this. I registered to get a code for my Dad's Becker radio (got the code, thanks again to the fellow who helped out!). I've got a couple of questions, just out of idle curiosity.
In looking for this code he got bitten by a scammer, couldn't find the information anywhere, and turned to me for help in the end, which is how I stumbled across you guys.
The questions I have are these:
1. Am I right in thinking there is some simple algorithm involved in producing the code?
2. If this is the case does an actual calculator really exist? (I assume it must since your members seem to be able to produce the codes on request). I must have come across dozens of hits for "calculators" on various sites which were not legit, named things like calculator.exe.exe (haha) etc. But does a REAL one exist? I don't need it, just curious to know.
3. Why so many scammers and rogues out there for what seems to be a very common problem and why don't the car manufacturers make it easier to access this information?
4. What is a RIFF JTAG and what does it have to do with radio codes anyhow?
5. Not really a question, but the helpfulness of this forum is something I'd like to say thanks for. I read a bunch of replies on the "legit" Mercedes forums which were less than helpful, people who kept saying that it's an anti-theft feature that stops people stealing radios or something. I'm willing to bet it's stopped 0 radios being stolen and just annoys the hell out of legit users like my Dad, leads to them getting scammed, etc etc. You people were extremely fast and very helpful, I'm glad this forum exists. Dad is very grateful as well!
Sorry if these are rude questions, this whole project just got me thinking about it and it's a bit fascinating to me, honestly NOT fishing for information that might get anyone into trouble (I get the feeling people can get into trouble for this, though god knows why). Thanks in advance for any replies.
