Android7.1.2 Nougat Beta Brings 'Swipe for Notifications' Gesture to Nexus5X, Nexus6P

Google started rolling out Android 7.1.2 Nougat public beta to all compatible devices just a few days ago. The reportedly brings the fingerprint 'swipe for notifications' gesture to Nexus 5X and Nexus 6P smartphones. This feature was first introduced only in Pixel devices even though all the smartphones contain the same fingerprint sensor hardware required for the feature.

As we mentioned, Google exclusively introduced the 'swipe for notifications' gesture in Google Pixel and Google Pixel XL. 9to5Mac reports that Nexus 5X users who have the latest beta installed, are being able to use this gesture feature. Nexus 6P users haven't got the latest beta release yet, but this feature is likely to be introduced for them as well, whenever the release hits, 9to5Mac speculates.

If your Nexus 5X is running on Android 7.1.2 Nougat public beta, you can find the feature in the Settings menu under Moves to enable it. The swipe for notifications gesture lets you open the notification panel just by swiping down on the fingerprint sensor at the back.

Android 7.1.2 Nougat public beta version is arriving for Pixel, Pixel XL, Nexus 5X, Nexus Player, and Pixel C devices as of now, while the company has confirmed that an update for Nexus 6P can be expected to be released soon. The Android 7.1.2 public beta images are also available to download for compatible devices. The final release of the Android 7.1.2 Nougat is expected to be made available in a couple of months.

Xiaomi Redmi Note 4X Launch Set for Wednesday

Xiaomi Redmi Note 4X Launch Set for Wednesday

      Highlights
Xiaomi Redmi Note 4X is launching in China
The launch event will happen on February 14
Pricing and availability details will be revealed then

After many leaks, Xiaomi launched the Redmi Note 4 smartphone in August last year. Now, the company has announced that the Redmi Note 4X is incoming. The Chinese company took to Weibo to announce the launch of the Redmi Note 4X smartphone in China. The unveil event will take place on Wednesday, February 8 - which is when the pricing and availability will be revealed - and the smartphone will go on sale on Valentine's Day i.e., February 14.
The teaser was shared by Xiaomi on its official Weibo page, and it confirmed that the device will be called the Xiaomi Redmi Note 4X. While the image does not share any other details, the Redmi Note 4X is presumably going to be more expensive than the Redmi Note 4 smartphone.
The Xiaomi Redmi Note 4X has been leaked on several occasions in the past as well, and its certification listing revealed key specifications details. The Redmi Note 4X is expected to feature a 5.5-inch full-HD display, be powered by a 2GHz deca-core CPU, thought to be the MediaTek Helio X20 SoC, though other countries including in India may see launch of a Snapdragon 653 SoC variant. Leaks suggest that the smartphone will pack 4GB of RAM, though 2GB and 3GB RAM variants will also be offered. Inbuilt storage variants include 16GB, 32GB and 64GB with microSD storage expansion (up to 32GB).
Dimensions are expected to be at 151x76.3x8.54mm, making it slightly wider and thicker than the Redmi Note 4's 151x76x8.3mm dimensions. It weighs in at 176.54 grams, slightly more than the Redmi Note 4's 175-gram weight. The Xiaomi Redmi Note 4X is tipped to run Android 6.0 Marshmallow. The device may sport a 13-megapixel rear camera, a 4000mAh battery, and a fingerprint sensor at the back.

Saurik Releases Cydia 1.1.28, Enables Tweak Purchases for iOS 10.2 Jailbre

Saurik has released Cydia 1.1.28 and enabled tweak purchases for users jailbroken on iOS 10.2.

Here's a look at the changes in Cydia 1.1.28:

        ● Cydia Now Users APT 1.14~b
This is a major update to the core package management logic used by Cydia. This library, which is shared with Linux distributions such as Debian and Ubuntu, is an industry standard, which Cydia has been excited to share. For purposes of performance and reliability, Cydia had a number of patches to the (rather old) copy of APT it had been using. It turns out APT's upstream has been paying attention, and was excited to have us update.

The big thing to know about this change is that there are a handful of repositories that are simply broken, and older versions of Cydia failed to notice. We've had this build of Cydia in a "public beta" now for an entire month, which has been a lot of time to get the more important of these to fix their corrupt metadata files. However, you may still run into warnings: you should remove the repositories which are broken, and it is not a bug in Cydia that you see warnings.

        ● Cydia is Now a 64-bit Process
Cydia is now compiled for ARM64. While this offers Cydia very little direct advantages (and probably comes at a performance penalty), this avoids a misleading dialog box from Apple and also happened to work around an issue on iOS 10 where no links in Cydia could be clicked. Note that this means that any extensions installed to modify Cydia will now need to be recompiled for 64-bit as well.

        ● Support for iOS 10
There are at least a handful of users using iOS 10 due to the new Yalu jailbreak: this version of Cydia has a couple minor modifications to make this work better for them. For those worried about Cydia on older systems: the vast majority of users are using iOS 7, 8, and 9 (in nearly equal percentages), and Cydia continues to support even older versions of iOS, so do not feel concerned about updating (I still haven't updated from my iOS 8.4 primary phone).

        ● Some Random Bug Fixes
iAdam1n reported an issue where removing a repository could cause Cydia to not provide a UI to return to the previous screen. Find Extensions for Applications was broken for a few releases, but has now been fixed. Due to the new Yalu jailbreak shipping with SSH, some long-standing "right after jailbreak" bugs were able to be understood and fixed, making Cydia less likely to fail right after installation.

Yalu iOS 10.2 Jailbreak Updated With Support for iPad Air 2, iPad Mini 4

Luca Todesco has updated the yalu iOS 10.2 jailbreak with support for the iPad Air 2 and the iPad mini 4.

The yalu jailbreak now supports all 64-bit iOS devices except for the iPhone 7. Unfortunately, the iPhone 7 may never be supported; however, you can follow iClarified on Twitter, Facebook, Google+, or RSS to be notified if is.

Yesterday Apple stopped signing iOS 10.2 which means you cannot upgrade, downgrade, or restore to the firmware using iTunes. If you've already saved your iOS 10.2 SHSH blobs you may be able to downgrade your device. We'll have some more details on that soon.

You can download Yalu 10.2 from the link below.

Make sure to thank @qwertyoruiopz for making this jailbreak possible!

Apple will be starting iPhone 8 production early, says report

Apple will be starting iPhone 8 production early, says report:

According to reports, Apple is planning to start production of the iPhone 8 much earlier than usual. The report in Barron’s Tech Trader Daily states that there are some indications that the next flagship from the Cupertino giant will be on the manufacturing line by June this year. This information is based on quotes from Bluefin Research Partners’ John Donovan and Steve Mullane. Although, it is to be noted that this does not imply an earlier launch date for the flagship.

If this report is accurate, it will be the first time Apple will be going for an early production run. To quote the exact words from the report, “The most intriguing data points that we have uncovered suggests that AAPL is ramping the next generation iPhones earlier than historical norms, although we have no indication that there has been any change in release plans for the iPhone 8/X,”. This comes in the light of the Samsung Galaxy Note 7 disaster last year and might be Apple’s way of ensuring that a similar oversight in device quality does not occur on their next flagship.

Another reason behind this could be related to the year 2017 being the 10th anniversary of the iPhone. Rumours have been spreading about the various features that Apple might be implementing, starting from edgeless displays, facial recognition to an on-screen fingerprint sensor. If these rumours are to be believed as well, the early production might be to avoid any difficulties in manufacturing a more complicated design.

There are strong indications that Apple will be launching three new iPhones this year, with updates to the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus expected along with an unknown iPhone X, which is probably going to be the rumoured iPhone 8. Some other features rumoured on the iPhone 8 are wireless charging, flexible OLED displays and a return to the glass sandwich design.

Galaxy S8 release>photos show phone fix nightmare!

Galaxy S8 release>photos show phone fix nightmare!

The Samsung Galaxy S8 photo leaks shown this week may look like photos of the device placed on a display-friendly mat, but they’re renders. That said, major companies like Samsung and Apple have been known to use renders in their presentation of devices on their websites – even in their online stores. Renders such as these can show a whole lot about the device before the teardown repair-people get at it.

Those that specialize in repairing broken smartphones – hardware specialists, in this case – will likely be displeased with what they see with the Galaxy S8. Not necessarily because it’s going to need repairs, but because repairs are not going to be easy. While Samsung will surely use reinforced glass on the front and back of this smartphone – if indeed this is the real deal – there’s little indication that the device will be any easier to take apart and put back together than the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge.

The images shown immediately above and below this paragraph are easily mistaken by the uninitiated as photos. In fact these are computer renders, revealed yesterday by the likes of OnLeaks and GearIndia. As we see here, there’s little different between the last generation and this one in the way of ruggedness. I can’t imagine this device will be any MORE breakable than its predecessors, but it does not seem like it’ll be any less – again, based on what we understand about the device from leaks and rumors.

              The Samsung Galaxy S6 was 143.4 x 70.5 x 6.8 mm with a 5.1-inch flat touchscreen display. The Galaxy S7 was 142.4 x 69.6 x 7.9 mm with a 5.1-inch flat touchscreen display. The Galaxy S8 is tipped to be 140.1 x 72.2 x 7.3 mm with around an 5.7 or 5.8-inch display with curved left and right sides.

This new Galaxy device would be shorter, wider, and thinner than its most recent predecessor. It’d be shorter, wider, and thicker than the Samsung Galaxy S6, however – doing more, again, to reduce the camera bump at the back. Users would likely rather have a thicker smartphone if it meant less of a bump.
Below you’ll see one of the most recent images of what was rumored to be a Samsung Galaxy S8 – in reality it’s a fake. You’ll notice a black blotch in the center and the incorrect placement of the reflection on the left-hand side. Therein lies the problem – or the set of problems. Unless, of course, the creator added these to throw us off track, too!

The Samsung Galaxy S8 will be revealed in the weeks after the end of Mobile World Congress 2017. MWC 2017 ends at the beginning of March, and Samsung will likely have the Galaxy S8 available for sale by the end of that month. Below you’ll see a collection of Samsung Galaxy S8 articles about the device in question – stay tuned for the rest of the story!

MediaTek Helio P25 Octa-Core SoC Launched for Dual-Camera Smartphones

Taiwanese chipmaker MediaTek on Wednesday announced a new Helio system-on-chip (SoC) specifically targeted at dual-camera smartphones. The all-new Helio P25 is built on the 16nm process, and offers octa-core processing with the company's Imagiq, an Image Signal Processor (ISP) technology.

The company says that smartphones featuring the new MediaTek Helio P25 can be expected to be available in the market in Q1 2017. MediaTek says that the Helio P25 is an upgrade to the company's older Helio P10 and P20 SoCs, and it combines dual-camera support with power efficiency.

The MediaTek Helio P25 packs a 12-bit dual ISP which offers support for up to 24-megapixel single camera or dual 13-megapixel cameras. The company says that the Helio P25 is dual camera-optimised and comes with features like Colour, Mono de-noise, and real-time shallow DoF bokeh effect. The new chip supports video HDR with full preview and also comes with high performance auto exposure.

The Helio P25 offers up to 25 percent better power efficiency than previous versions, and MediaTek promotes to deliver more power while using less energy. On the graphics side, MediaTek Helio P25 packs the recent ARM Mali-T880 dual GPU clocked at up to 900MHz, which the company says it perfect for demanding video and gaming apps. Google Launches Android Wear 2.0, Two LG Watches With like Apple’s Digital Crown

Google today finally launched Android Wear 2.0, the latest version of its wearable-focused operating system. Apart from releasing the new software for wearables, the announcement also included the arrival of two new smartwatches that use the new software at their core – the LG Watch Sport and LG Watch Style. Both of the new devices are available from February 10th.

Kicking things off with the new watches, aesthetically they are similar in that they both pack circular OLED displays that measure 1.38 inches on the LG Watch Sport and 1.20 inches on the LG Watch Style. The Style is the thinner, more elegant of the two and also has the most strap options while the Sport brings with it many more features, including cellular connectivity, GPS, NFC, and a larger battery.

Both watches feature a new “rotating power button,” which sounds suspiciously like the Digital Crown that lives on all Apple Watch models since 2014

Initially only available in the United States, the LG Watch Style can be picked up at your local Best Buy or indeed the Google Store for $249. Those who would prefer the additional functionality of the LG Watch Sport will be able to pick one up at AT&T, Verizon, and the Google Store for $349. Color options include silver, rose gold, and titanium for the Style and titanium and blue for the Sport.

Software-wise, Android Wear 2.0 – which was announced almost a year ago at I/O 2016 but released only now – includes improved support for watch faces, which can now be customized, as well as the growing Google Assistant, Android Pay, ability to install apps without connected phone, and more. Mostly, the software plays a catchup to what Apple Watch and Samsung’s Tizen-based Gear S line of smartwatches have been doing for a while.

                  Code:
You can now personalize your Android Wear always-on watch face with information and actions from your favorite apps. Simply glance at your wrist to check your next appointment, stock performance, progress on fitness goals, or whatever is important to you.

A quick tap on your watch face lets you instantly order an Uber ride, start a workout, or get in touch with your significant other. Interested in different info throughout the day? Just swipe to switch your watch face as you go from the office to the gym to dinner with friends and home again.
                  VIDEO

With both watches available to buy this week in the United States, and further territories expected to be able to order one in due course, we’re pleased to see some added competition for the watchOS in the shape of Android Wear 2.0. The more the competition, the better all smartwatches will become.

                    • Samsung said to introduce foldable displays later this month
                    • Foldable displays and phones to be showcased to select audience
                    • A commercial product likely to make its way to the market by Q4

Samsung has been rumoured to be working on foldable display devices for long, and if a new report is to be believed then it may launch a commercial product by Q4 2017. The company is said to be finally prepared to reveal the foldable smartphones in a closed door event at the side-lines of MWC 2017 in Barcelona later this month.
A report from South Korea claims that Samsung Electronics and Samsung Display are gearing to introduce foldable displays and smartphones to a select audience at the upcoming MWC 2017 trade show. According to ET News, Samsung will showcase the foldable display and smartphone in a private room with the aim to get feedback from the attendees.
The report adds that the select audience preview will be used by Samsung as a way to predict demand from market for the foldable displays and smartphones. It stresses that Samsung has chosen not to showcase the new technology to the general public as of now.
ET News adds that Samsung Electronics and Samsung Display are preparing to showcase both in-foldable products, which can be bend inwardly like books, and out-foldable products, which bend panels outwardly. Both companies have reportedly finished making "videos of new prototypes and others."
One of the possible reasons why Samsung is showcasing the foldable displays and smartphones to other companies as it could plan to sell displays and technology to other handset vendors for commercial use.
Additionally, Samsung is also rumoured to work on a clam-type smartphone. Unlike regular clam smartphones, the company is said to start small production of its first foldable model sporting a flexible AMOLED display in the fourth quarter of 2017. Digitimes cites sources from Taiwan's handset supply chain and adds that the company has already applied patents related to foldable smartphones to the US Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) in late 2016.
The report however adds that Samsung isn't the only one which has applied for patents for such smartphones as Apple, LG, and Microsoft have also filed similar patents.
Last year, a report suggested that Samsung will debut a 'dual-screen' smartphone that has flat screens on both side as well as a phone with single flexible OLED display this year. The alleged patent could be for the same product.

Report: Xiaomi to Release its Own ‘Pinecone’ SoC Within the next Month

Report: Xiaomi to Release its Own ‘Pinecone’ SoC Within the next Month

It is no secret that the Chinese smartphone market has started to stagnate in terms of growth. Slowing demand, increasing costs, and relentless competition makes it all the more difficult for Chinese domestic OEMs to survive with razor thin profit margins.
Xiaomi’s story resonates with this general trend. The company was leading China in smartphones sold in 2015, but has recently slipped down to fifth place behind other OEMs like Oppo, Huawei, Vivo, and Apple. So it comes as no surprise that the OEM is looking at different areas to maintain and grow its advantage.
As reported by The Wall Street Journal, Xiaomi is planning to introduce a phone powered by a custom made microprocessor. The company plans to release its ‘Pinecone’ SoC within a month, making it the second smartphone OEM from China after Huawei to produce smartphones with its own processors. This report builds upon previous leaks and rumors regarding Xiaomi featuring its own SoC in its rumored ‘Meri’ smartphone.
The report mentions that developments on the new processor have been closely guarded. A new Xiaomi-linked private entity by the name of Beijing Pinecone Electronics paid 103 Million CNY ($15 Million) to acquire mobile processor technology from Chinese state-backed Datang Telecom’s subsidiary, Leadcore Technology Ltd. The two companies, Beijing Pinecone Electronics and Leadcore Technology, planned to jointly design mobile chips.
The new homegrown chip and related technology could help protect the OEM from supply chain disruptions. Recent increased demand of the Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 from Samsung has left Qualcomm unable to supply enough stocks for other OEMs’ need. This has forced OEMs such as LG to plan a release for its 2017 flagship with the Qualcomm Snapdragon 821 instead. Xiaomi relies on Qualcomm SoCs for its premium category smartphones, while its budget devices pack a MediaTek SoC for the domestic market.
Having its own SoC also works in favor of Xiaomi in India. Patent disputes force Xiaomi to use Qualcomm powered devices across all price points in the country. India is Xiaomi’s most important overseas market, gaining higher importance on account of stagnation of the Chinese market.
Designing its own SoC will also help Xiaomi better integrate and optimize their hardware and software experiences. What remains unknown is how these in-house SoCs will perform against flagship SoCs from competitors like Apple, Samsung, and Huawei. It also puts into question how developer friendly these devices would be, if at all.
What are your thoughts on Xiaomi opting for its own in-house SoC? Do we need more diversity and competition in the mobile SoC sector? Let us know in the comments below!

                        AppSync For iOS 10 / 10.2 Jailbreak Released [Unified 6.0 Beta1]

The highly anticipated AppSync Unified 6.0 beta with support for iOS 10 / iOS 10.2 jailbreak is now available to download and install.

It was less than a week ago that we brought you the news that a number of hurdles in the development of AppSync Unified had been overcome, but we weren’t sure of when it will be released. Well, it’s out now as version 6.0 beta 1, and supports installation and use on jailbroken iOS 10 devices.

For those of you out there who are new to the world of jailbreaking, or who simply have yet to experience what AppSync Unified is all about, it is essentially a jailbreak package which lets unsigned iOS apps be installed directly to iPhones and iPads.

Typically speaking, third-party apps or Apple’s own offerings on the App Store are signed with a certificate that belongs to the developer and is trusted by the iOS ecosystem. That’s how apps are allowed to be installed and executed on devices. However, the existence of AppSync Unified basically means that jailbroken device owners can install apps without having to go through any stringent signing or approval process.

Normally, iOS would reject such an installation, but AppSync Unified bypasses those checks and security measures to make it possible.

AppSync Unified has been used to allow non-signed jailbreak apps to be successfully installed on a device, such as gaming emulators that otherwise wouldn’t be accepted to the iOS App Store.

This latest release means that hard work, determination, and obstacle-overcoming has all been worth it, resulting in an AppSync Unified experience which while may still currently be in beta form, but working on the latest jailbroken iOS 10 devices.

As is usually the case, the latest version has been uploaded to the developer’s own repository at Home :: Karen's Repo, meaning that those who already have that added in Cydia can go and grab the latest version right now as a free-of-charge download.

There’s no real word on when AppSync Unified will exit its beta state, or if there are any known serious issues with it at the current time, but it’s clearly in a stable enough position for the very experienced developer to put it up for download.

Nokia 3310 Is Relaunching At Mobile World Congress 2017 This Month

The phone was first released in 2000 and some are still going strong
Nokia will re-launch the 3310, perhaps the best-loved and most resilient phone in history.
The phone, originally released in 2000 and in many ways beginning the modern age of mobiles, will be sold as a way of getting lots of battery life in a nearly indestructible body.
The new incarnation of the old 3310 will be sold for just €59, and so likely be pitched as a reliable second phone to people who fondly remember it the first time around. It will be revealed at Mobile World Congress later this month

Apple iOS 10.3 Release Has A Great Secret Feature

Apple iOS 10.3 is a big release packed full of new features, but dig deep and you will find it also has a very popular one that has not been included in the official release notes… ‘Great Secret Features’ and ‘Nasty Surprises’ are my regular columns investigating operating system updates for the best features / biggest problems hidden behind the headlines.

Apple iOS 10 has had an eventual time since it was first released in September. Image credit: Apple

Buried in the settings of iOS 10.3 is the ability for Verizon customers to make WiFi calls without the need for your iPhone. Discovered by MacRumors, simply navigate to Settings > Phone > Calls on Other Devices and toggle it on, you will then see all the devices you can connect and toggle them on or off individually. This brings Verizon customers parity with iPhone owners on AT&T, Sprint and T-Mobile who have had access to this for some time.
Edit: some comments on this article mention Verizon already offers WiFi Calling. Please note this is inferior to the WiFi Calling functionality that iOS 10.3 brings. This is explained in the paragraph below.

What Is This Upgraded WiFi Calling?
In short: iOS 10.3 brings an upgraded version of WiFi Calling which allows iPhone users to make and receive WiFi calls on all their other iCloud-connected devices whether that is an iPad, iPod touch, Apple Watch or Mac. The big differentiator between what Verizon customers had before and what they will have with iOS 10.3 is WiFi Calling on these devices still works even if your iPhone is on a different WiFi network or switched off - nothing needs to be routed through your iPhone as before.
This can come in very useful if, for example, your iPhone is out of battery.

WiFi Calling in iOS 10 now comes to Verizon. Image credit: MacRumors

While Verizon customers will be delighted by this addition, it is actually long overdue. After all not only do the network’s biggest rivals offer this already but so do many smaller US carriers like MetroPCS and Simple Mobile. It has also been rolled out by several international carriers.
Verizon customers eager for this enhanced WiFi Calling should jump on the iOS 10.3 beta release which is available now. If you haven’t signed up for iOS beta releases this can be done at Apple’s Beta Software Program site. Note bugs are often found in betas so if you prefer to wait for the final release of iOS 10.3 it remains about a month away.
