Micromax to launch 4G-enabled feature phone soon

Micromax to launch 4G-enabled feature phone soon

NEW DELHI: Home-bred handset maker Micromax is aiming to sell 5-6 million units of its upcoming Bharat 1 VoLTE feature phone and Bharat 2 VoLTE smartphone in India over the next 5 to 6 months, which will help it enhance its overall market share and better compete with Chinese and domestic handset makers, Micromax Chief Marketing Officer Shubhajit Sen told ETTelecom its India Mobile Congress event.

Sen said that the telco is in talks with telecom operators regarding collaboration for these devices. "We are working on technologies which would be of high interest to the operators in India," he said.

While Bharat 2 is going to be launched in about two weeks, Bharat 1 will be launched post the launch of Bharat 2. The company will also come up with Bharat 3. Sen didn't share further details.

However, the devices will be open devices and not be co-branded, and they will be manufactured in India.
Bharat 2 is going to be the first Google+ approved phone to be priced below Rs 3000, the phone will be a 4G VoLTE smartphone. The device will have a Java based OS instead of Android. Bharat 1 is going to be Micromax's first 4G VoLTE feature phone which is going to be priced at Rs 1999.

"Because of some of the operators giving free voice calls over 4G VoLTE, we're seeing a spike in the demand of 4G VoLTE feature phones. On the other hand, Bharat 2 is going to totally disrupt the entry level smartphone segment," said Sen, adding that a lot of demand will be coming from tier and tier 3 cities.

Both these devices will be targeted at taking mobile banking to the masses, and may have a back link to digital wallets offered by Transerv and the ability to pay offline merchants through mVisa.
"Right now we're focussing a lot on payments as an area we can add value to," said Sen when asked about its focus areas.

In January, the government held a meeting of Indian smartphone manufacturers Karbonn, Intex, Micromax and Lava where it asked companies to come up with 4G VoLTE devices that cost less than Rs 2000.

Micromax has slumped to five in the overall rankings, out of the top five for smartphones. However, the company which is manufacturing 70-75%of its devices in India is hopeful of gaining top spots by the end of April-June quarter.

Google's next app will make photo editing more social [26/03/2017]

Google isn't usually shy about launching experimental new apps and then closing them back down again if they don't work,

and it sounds like the tech giant's next testing of the app waters will revolve around photo editing with friends.

The idea behind the as-yet-unannounced app is that you and your buddies can work on enhancing your best pictures together and then sharing the result, reports TechCrunch.

Think about those WhatsApp groups you and your friends are in - but with a primary focus on posting pictures.

It perhaps won't be a million miles away from the Clips app that Apple just announced to widespread indifference.

The kids of today are living their lives inside Instagram and Snap-chat, and Apple and Google want a piece of the action.

                Photos with friends

The app would be bolstered by some of the smart, sophisticated auto-editing features found in the likes of Google Photos and YouTube,

so there would no doubt be a ton of auto-effects and filters to pick from when tweaking your images, and of course instant facial recognition and tagging for all your pals.

None of this is exactly official at the moment but Google has confirmed to Engadget that such an app is in the works.

Right now it's being labelled as "an experiment" and may not ever see the light of day if Google execs don't see any potential in it.

What it does show is that Google isn't giving up on grabbing some social networking action just yet, no matter how many apps it has to release.

if users are spending their time inside photo apps rather than searching the web, then Google has to respond.

Google Tipped to Be Working on 'Play Pass' App and Games Subscription Service for Pla

Google is said to be working on an app subscription service for Google Play. According to compelling evidence discovered in a report, Google Play may soon introduce a subscription service called 'Play Pass' that offers users paid apps and games for a monthly fee. As per the latest information, the new service may let Android users subscribe to paid apps on Google Play by paying a monthly fee. The potential feature was reportedly first spotted in a Play Store APK teardown back in June, while this week a Google survey about a subscription service for apps was also discovered. Notably, Google is yet to confirm its plans for the Play Pass subscription service.

At the time, noted developer Kieron Quinn of MightyQuinnApps had suggested that the feature could be a subscription service. He found it while digging around the Google Play Store using the Xposed Framework. While turning feature flag to 'true' reportedly did not reveal any changes in the Play Store, decompiling the code showed that 'Play Pass' could have something to with a subscription service. However, since the feature couldn't be activated at the time, no details were available.Meanwhile, in a survey conducted via the Google Opinion Rewards programme recently, the company was spotted asking users how well 'Pass' described an unnamed 'app store' that "has a subscription service that offers hundreds of dollars worth of paid apps and games for a monthly fee." This essentially indicates that the tech giant could be seeking to finalise the branding.

It is worth noting that Google has not provided any official details that suggest it will introduce an app subscription service called 'Play Pass'. Teardowns are speculative in nature as the service may or may not get the same features in its next update. However, the report does suggest that Google is at least planning on bringing it.

Huawei Announces EMUI 9.0 Global Rollout Begins on November 10, Based on Android Pie

Huawei has announced that the latest version of its custom Android ROM - EMUI 9.0 - will be rolled out to 9 models starting November 10. EMUI 9.0 is based on Android 9.0 Pie, and apart from the numerous new features that Google's latest mobile operating system brings, Huawei's iteration brings features like GPU Turbo 2.0, HiVision visual search, Password Vault, Digital Balance dashboard, and more. As with previous iterations of the operating system, EMUI 9.0 also comes with AI-based predictive features that learn user behaviour to improve system response speed, app launch time, and more.

To recall, EMUI 9.0 was first unveiled in September, and has been available in beta for several models since, starting with the Huawei Mate 10, Mate 10 Pro, P20, P20 Pro, Honor 10 , and Honor Play. Since the beta, it has launched four smartphones running EMUI 9.0 - Huawei Mate 20, Mate 20 Pro, Mate 20 X, and Huawei Mate 20 RS Porsche Design. The Honor Magic 2 also runs it, but only temporarily, until Magic UI 2.0 is rolled out to it.Getting back to the news at hand, Huawei's EMUI handle in a Weibo post late last week revealed that the EMUI 9.0 will be rolling out to the nine of its top-end smartphones on November 10. The smartphones that will be receiving the EMUI 9.0 update from that date are the Huawei P20, P20 Pro, Mate 10, Mate 10 Pro, Mate 10 Porsche Design, Mate RS Porsche Design, Honor 10, Honor View 10 (known as Honor V10 in China), and Honor Play. GSMArena cites Chinese sources to claim that the rollout will be global.

The Chinese telecommunications giant has previously also revealed that EMUI 9.0 will be launched in India with country-specific features. It added that EMUI-specific research is conducted in a localized fashion, with different research institutes in India, China, Europe, and North America.Let's take a look at some of the top features of EMUI 9.0: GPU Turbo 2.0 is designed to optimise intensive workloads and give an on-demand performance boost to the devices while reducing power consumption. There is also an Uninterrupted Gaming Mode to meet the needs of mobile gamers. Using onboard AI capabilities, EMUI 9.0 brings HiVision that enables the camera app to recognise major landmarks, paintings, and structures surrounding the environment and provide users with the relevant information using a layer of augmented reality.

EMUI 9.0 additionally includes a new Password Vault that helps users store their encrypted password with face or fingerprint for various services. Plus, there is a new Digital Balance dashboard that allows users to track device usage metrics and let them set the usage quota for each app. Other features include new navigation gestures, multiple backup options, one-handed controls, and improved Huawei Share features.

iPhone X Safari Bug Claimed to Allow Hackers Access

A Safari vulnerability on the iPhone X has been revealed by two hackers at the Mobile Pwn2Own contest in Tokyo this week. Winners of the contest, part of the Fluoroacetate team, have discovered a bug that allowed them to access photos in the “Recently Deleted” folder of the Photos app on an Apple device running the latest iOS 12.1. For this discovery, Fluoroacetate team members Richard Zhu and Amat Cam have received a reward of $50,000 and 8 Master of Pwn points in the contest. Additionally, Apple has been warned of this vulnerability, as per the rules of the Mobile Pwn2Own contest.Forbes reports that the two hackers came together to find this unique vulnerability in the Safari browser on Apple devices running iOS 12.1. However, the attack might not be limited to just photos. During the setup of the concerned iPhone, a photo had been deleted and remained on the disk. As it was the first file that the hackers found on the disk, it was used for the vulnerability demo.

The report goes on to explain that the bug was part of the JIT (just-in-time) compiler which is designed to make the iPhone faster by speeding up computer code compilation. In a “coffee shop scenario”, the two hackers managed to exploit this JIT compiler using an attack via a malicious Wi-Fi access point. While Apple has been informed about this bug, it hasn't yet issued a resolution. The tech giant hasn't even released a statement yet, but we can expect that to happen soon given the popularity of this event.

It is turning out to be quite the time for Apple as it was recently caught up in a couple of fiascos. Firstly, analysts and suppliers have dropped iPhone shipment estimates leading the company to lose significant market value.

MediaTek Helio M70 5G Baseband Chipset Showcased

Chip maker MediaTek showcased its first 5G baseband chipset — the Helio M70 — at the China Mobile Global Partner Conference in Guangzhou, China. This unveiling comes a few months after the Helio M70 5G chip was first announced at Computex 2018 in Taiwan in June this year. With this launch, the MediaTek Helio M70 is part of the industry's first wave of 5G multi-mode integrated baseband chipsets. The chipset is 2G/3G/4G/5G-enabled and supports 5G radio (NR).

MediaTek's Helio M70 5G baseband chipset also supports standalone architecture (SA), non-standalone architecture (NSA), the sub-6GHz frequency band, high power user equipment (HPUE), and other 5G technologies required in a modern-day chipset. Other than that, the Helio M70 offers backward compatibility to 4G, 3G, and even 2G networks in the absence of 5G connectivity. For this, it makes use of LTE and 5G dual connectivity. It is designed in compliance with the 3GPP Rel-15 specifications with a data rate of 5Gbps. MediaTek claims that the simplified design of the chipset allows manufacturers to make 5G capable devices with a smaller form factor, improved energy efficiency, and good aesthetics.A partnership with telecom giant China Mobile, MediaTek states, will help build an industry ecosystem to achieve 5G roadmap goals next year. Not just China Mobile, MediaTek is also collaborating with other companies including Huawei, Nokia, NTT Docomo, and more. While the Helio M70 baseband chipset is available now, it is expected to ship in the second half of 2019.

At the announcement earlier this year, key features of the MediaTek Helio M70 SoC were revealed. It is based on TSMC's 7nm process. The chipset supports ARM Cortex-A53 processing units, dual camera setups, and AI enhancements using the MediaTek NeuroPilot.“MediaTek is committed to promoting the adoption of the latest technologies. With the commercialisation of the first 5G baseband chipset, Helio M70, consumers will be able to enjoy the exciting 5G experience from a mature and complete solution,” said TL Lee, General Manager, MediaTek Wireless Communications Division. “In the future, 5G and AI application areas will continue to grow, enhancing the connected experience for users in areas such as mobile phones or smart living.”

PSA: 773M email addresses and 21M passwords exposed by hackers, check yours here

Some 773M email addresses have been exposed by hackers in what is the largest ever breach. Alongside the email addresses are 21M passwords

Security professional and Microsoft Regional Director Troy Hunt said that the collection of email addresses and passwords comes from thousands of different sources, and the raw numbers were even higher before he started de-duping and cleaning up the data to find out what hackers had actually obtained.

Let’s start with the raw numbers because that’s the headline, then I’ll drill down into where it’s from and what it’s composed of. Collection #1 is a set of email addresses and passwords totalling 2,692,818,238 rows. It’s made up of many different individual data breaches from literally thousands of different sources […]

In total, there are 1,160,253,228 unique combinations of email addresses and passwords. This is when treating the password as case sensitive but the email address as not case sensitive. This also includes some junk because hackers being hackers, they don’t always neatly format their data dumps into an easily consumable fashion […]

The unique email addresses totalled 772,904,991 [and] 21,222,975 unique passwords.
Many of the passwords were encrypted, but using weak hashes which has enabled them to be cracked.

Hunt told Wired that although the individual hacks that generated the data were smaller, the aggregated data represents the largest volume ever seen.

“It just looks like a completely random collection of sites purely to maximize the number of credentials available to hackers,” Hunt tells WIRED. “There’s no obvious patterns, just maximum exposure.”

That sort of Voltron breach has happened before, but never on this scale. In fact, not only is this the largest breach to become public, it’s second only to Yahoo’s pair of incidents—which affected 1 billion and 3 billion users, respectively—in size. Fortunately, the stolen Yahoo data hasn’t surfaced. Yet.

The data has been loaded into Have I Been Pwned, so you can check whether it includes you by searching for your email address there.

If your email address is found, you should be extra vigilant for phishing attacks. Never click a login link in an email you weren’t expecting, even if it looks legitimate – always type a known valid URL yourself or use your own bookmarks.

The usual security advice also applies: always use strong, unique passwords for every website, and always opt for two-factor authentication when it is offered.
